This site gives kids a safe reporting tool to help schools reduce bullying (read review) Based on the principles of Situational Crime Prevention, this tool reduces opportunity for bullying by increasing the number of kids willing to make reports as it collects facts without using names. Schools use reports to investigate and/or increase monitoring to deter bullying. Reports are approved for posting by Tom Letson, a NJ School Counselor. Print and post a sign in your school today! About Skills & Strategies to Deter Bullying by Tom Letson MA LPC This site also includes individual skills and strategies to help empower students when dealing with bullying with the goal of providing a bully with less of a pay-off and bolstering self-esteem. Included are avoidance, selective ignoring, appropriate verbal exchanges, neutral/confident body language and facial expressions, and self control. The use of such personal safety skills by students who deal with bullying is not well researched and subsequently leads some professionals and organizations dealing with bullying to a conclusion such as this:
"An example of a site not being useful or evidence-based would be a site which promotes the message that bullied children are primarily responsible for ending the bullying (e.g., by getting stronger in some way, or by ignoring the bullying)." (http://www.njbullying.org/links.htm)
Teaching students how to appropriately ignore the mean behavior of another does not necessarily promote the message that they are primarily responsible for ending the bullying. Teaching students who are assessed as being good candidates to learn and use skills to avoid and reduce the risk of bullying is comparable to the rationale in teaching personal safety skills and tactics. For example, if teaching rape prevention skills usually includes a strong foundation of awareness, risk reduction and avoidance strategies, why shouldn't bullying prevention? (http://www.rad-systems.com/Articles/community.html) In fact, teaching kids how to deal with bullying should be individualized - what is good for one may not be good for another.
