Deterring Bullying Recidivists

The most important goal of any bullying prevention program.

by Tom Letson MA LPC

September brings a new school year and the need to remind students of appropriate social interaction within the school building and the school’s policy on bullying and harassment. An effective anti-bullying September orientation program including the implementation of an anonymous bully reporting system can serve to deter bullying throughout the school year.

Posting "No Bullying" signs with reporting information throughout the school and on school buses provides a visual deterrent for students from September to June.  Posted signs also provide a vital tool for staff to deter offending students from reengaging in bullying behavior.

For example, after speaking to a student about a bullying incident, a staff member can end the meeting with this reminder: "And don’t forget Jimmy, we have a reporting system and many eyes will be on you now. Be careful about what you say and do or you will probably end up in my office again and you know what that means: Detention and loss of Play Station 2 according to your Mom."  "Now don't let me see you in here again and let those signs be a reminder to you that you need to watch your behavior."

The value of using the above intervention is immeasurable.  If your school does not have a reporting system to deter bullying, consider implementing Bullystoppers.com today!
